A. The only appropriate use of fire by a child is when a child is properly supervised, is of an responsible age, properly trained, and for a productive purpose, such as cooking or manufacturing items.
Q. If my child sets a fire can he be charged with a crime?
A. Yes. In some states a child as young as age 7 can be charged with Arson.
Q. If my child is charged with Arson, will he go to jail?
A. Not in every situation, many courts may order your child to complete a juvenile firesetter education program, do community service or pay a fine.
Q. If my child does not complete the juvenile firesetter program, what will happen?
A. If court ordered, your child may be referred back to the court or referring agency, who will impose new sanctions that may include jail time or placement.
Q. Is firesetting a phase that the child will grow out of?
A. Firesetting is not a phase. Studies show that firesetting is a progressive behavior and if the child does not recive qualified fire safety education and intervention services, the child will continue to light more fires, and those fires witll be more riskier, more destructive and sometimes deadly.

A. Children set fires for many reasons, sometimes the set fires out of curiosity, sometimes out of boredom or to fit in with peers. The laso sometimes light fires to seek attention or cry out for help.
Q. If my child sets a fire, what should I do?
A. If there is an active fire, call 911 or your local fire department right away. You should always seek advice or help for your child.
Q. My childs fire was just a small fire, whats the big deal?
A. All big fires start out small, it is not the size of the fire that matters, but the firesetting actions that need to be of real concern.
